Wine Dark Waters

Wine Dark Waters

Info

Wine Dark Waters is a consulting firm led by a husband-and-wife team with deep roots in education and nonprofit leadership. Their work helps schools and mission-driven organizations think clearly, act intentionally and move from good to great. They offer practical consulting and implementation services focused on culture, workflow, development and faith formation, all grounded in wisdom, humility and a genuine love for helping people flourish.

When WDW reached out, they had a strong sense of mission but no visual system to express it. The name, taken from Homer’s “wine-dark sea,” called for something rich, symbolic and enduring: a brand that could speak to both faith-based schools and professional audiences without falling into cliché.

Approach

The identity centers on a simple, abstract mark: a stylized boat cutting through waves that calm as they move outward. The image references the Barque of Peter and the Gospel story where Christ calms the storm, asking, “Who is this whom even wind and sea obey?” (Mark 4).

From another view, the shape resembles a dove in flight, recalling the Spirit hovering over the waters in Genesis and the promise of peace after the flood. The result is a modern, geometric symbol that feels both sacred and sophisticated. It gives WDW the credibility of a consultancy while preserving the heart of its mission.

The color palette is restrained and elegant, built around a deep claret inspired by the brand’s name and balanced by cool blue-green tones. Most materials live in black and white, allowing the accent colors to add warmth and focus. Typography in IvyPresto Text provides a bridge between old-world grace and modern clarity, mirroring the organization’s approach to wisdom and renewal.

Outcome

The final identity positions Wine Dark Waters as serious and soulful, giving the firm a visual presence that feels at home among modern consultancies yet grounded in something timeless. It conveys steadiness, empathy, and conviction, setting the tone for an organization built to guide others through change with calm and confidence.
